8/10Cairngorms Outer Loop
200km, elevation 2,200m, off road 70%, 2 nights camping
The Cairngorms Outer Loop is one of Scotland’s most iconic and rewarding bikepacking routes – a true Highlands adventure that circles the edges of the Cairngorms, the UK’s largest national park. Expect a stunning mix of wild open moorland, ancient Caledonian pine forest, and remote, rough tracks that really make you feel like you’ve left the everyday behind.
This route isn’t just about spinning the pedals – part of the challenge (and charm) is that some sections are a real test, especially when fully loaded. You’ll likely find yourself hike-a-biking over rough ground, hauling your bike through a few punchy sections, and even wading across cold Highland streams – wet feet and a splash of adventure guaranteed.
With varied and sometimes technical surfaces, I recommend an absolute minimum tyre width of 44mm. It’s possible to tackle the loop on a gravel bike if you’ve got solid off-road experience, but a mountain bike will definitely be more forgiving and comfortable.
2 hour drive to start.
Meet at 8am and aim to be on the road no later than 9am. Return to Glasgow on evening of day three.
